CAGR explained simply — what it means, how to calculate it, why mutual funds use it, and how to compare investment returns correctly.
CAGR stands for Compound Annual Growth Rate. It tells you the steady annual growth rate an investment would have needed to go from its beginning value to its ending value over a given period, assuming profits were reinvested each year.
It's the standard metric used to compare mutual fund returns, stock performance, and any investment that grows over time.
CAGR = (Ending Value / Beginning Value)^(1/Years) − 1
Example: You invested ₹1 lakh in 2019. Today (2026, 7 years later) it's worth ₹2.5 lakh.
Simple return would say: 150% gain over 7 years = 21.4%/year. That's misleading — it ignores compounding. CAGR gives the true annualised return.
CAGR is also unaffected by volatility in between. Whether the investment went up-down-up or steadily grew, CAGR only looks at start and end.

At 12% CAGR, ₹10 lakh becomes ₹80 lakh in 18 years (doubles 3 times). At 7%, same ₹10L becomes only ₹38L in 18 years. The CAGR difference of 5% creates a 2x wealth gap over 18 years.
